About R.J. Howard Computing

R.J. Howard Computing was founded as a sole proprietorship in 1997 in San Diego, California for the purpose of providing affordable, competent web design, hardware, software and network support to the small business and non-profit communities.

In 1998 we returned to Palm Springs, California and joined the Desert Business Association (DBA) in order to better identify and serve small businesses. We also assumed responsibility for the DBA’s web site and membership database.

In 2000, we narrowed our focus to web and database design, as we felt that these were the most under served and misunderstood specialties in our local community.

In 2002, we:

  • Added Flash animation to our list of service offerings
  • Launched our web hosting service
  • Launched our pharmacy site, Medicineville.com
  • Added MCP, MCSE, and MCSA certifications
  • Added Teradata certifications

In 2003, we:

  • Added Adobe Acrobat (PDF) publishing capability
  • Added wireless network installation capabilities
  • Added Swish capability for rapid Flash deployment

In 2004, we:

  • Added phpBB (bulletin board) support
  • Added BosDirectory (link database) support
  • Added MySQL support

In 2005, we:

  • Added Gallery (photo management) support
  • Added BosClassifieds (classified ad) support

In 2006, we:

  • Added Google Ad Words support
  • Added WordPress (blog and web development) support

In 2007, we:

  • Added Miva pay-per-click support
  • Added RSS/Atom support via Carp and Grouper

Who’s a Consultant?

A consultant is a person who gives professional advice and/or services.

The operative word is professional.

A true consultant looks out for the needs of his client and puts their needs ahead of his own. In other words, he has a fiduciary* relationship with his client.

The guy who sold me my web site said he was a consultant.

Many salespeople today wrongly call themselves product consultants or sales consultants. Do not be confused by this. You cannot be a salesperson and a consultant at the same time.

A salesmans job is to get you to spend as much as possible. A consultants job is to help you get the most bang for the buck (in other words, to spend as little as possible and still get the job done).

Whom would you rather have advising you?

Bottom Line:

We are consultants in the true sense of the word, not salespeople.

How may we help you and your business?

________________
* fiduciary (adj.): Of, relating to, or involving a confidence or trust

Standard Rates

Standard rates vary widely, depending on factors such as:

  • Project complexity

  • Project duration

  • Proximity to our location

  • Client participation

Our rates are essentially unchanged since 1998. Typical hourly rates are as follows:

  • Web development & networking $45

  • Database administration $60

  • Travel time $30

Significant discounts are generally available for charitable organizations and long-term engagements. Charges for time spent at client site are not discountable unless otherwise negotiated.

Please note that we only charge for actual time expended. Any and all equipment and material purchased on the client’s behalf are billed at cost. This guarantees that we have no incentive to sell you more third-party services or equipment than you need.

Travel time charges are waived for site visits in Palm Springs, Cathedral City, and Rancho Mirage.
